Appalachian Trail

across the Susquehanna River

The Appalachian Trail is a continuous footpath along the Appalachian Mountains stretching over 2180 miles (approximately 5 million steps) from Georgia to Maine. It was conceived in 1921, completed in 1937, and designated as the first National Scenic Trail in 1968.  It is the nation’s longest, most accessible National Park, passing through or near more than 100 communities along the eastern seaboard, including the Borough of Duncannon, and serving nearly 3 million hikers a year. The A.T. is marked in both directions by white-paint blazes on trees, posts, and rocks. Following more than 3 decades of land protection by state and Federal agencies and private land conservancies, the Appalachian Trail corridor now forms a slender greenway that connects more than 75 public land areas in 14 states. It is a haven for biological diversity, protecting more than Continue reading

Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry Tri-County Logo

This message is brought to you in cooperation with the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission of Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry Counties.

The Harrisburg Area Transportation Study (HATS) is the federally mandated regional transportation planning body for Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry Counties. HATS is currently undertaking a regional bicycle and pedestrian study. As a part of this effort, we are conducting a public survey to identify how people walk and bike today and what improvements should be made for a safe and useful bicycle and pedestrian network in the future. The short survey is available online. The results will be used to identify current conditions and gaps in the system and it will shape the outcome and recommendations of the plan. The survey should only take five minutes and participation is anonymous.  Thank you for your interest!

Animal Signs on the Takach Property Hike

Duncannon Outdoor Club LogoThe Duncannon Outdoor Club sponsored a hike on Saturday, August 17th on the mountain land belonging to the Takach family. It was a great hike with lots to see. We found many animal signs: scats, galls, feathers, tracks, rubs, food litter, trails, bones, and dens. Seeing a doe and her fawn on the way to the hiking sight provided an exciting beginning.

Once on the property we started looking for signs. The most startling find was the 4 foot black snake the hike leader, Debra Takach, almost stepped on. It was sunning itself in a field. We found lots of scats, but the most interesting looked like the bear scats illustrated in the field guides. It would not be far fetched if it was truly bear scats, because the Takach family has had 3 visits from a mother bear and her yearling on their deck. The turkey scratchings we found were littered with scats and down turkey feathers. The turkeys were no doubt molting. An interesting set of deer tracks provided us with a mystery. It was obvious from the front tracks that the deer had stomped its front feet followed by right front foot scratching or pawing. Our guess was a buck was standing its ground and giving a warning to someone or something. All in all it was a wonderful day hike.

Come out to our next hike which has been moved to the 2nd Saturday in September (Sept. 14th) instead of our usual 3rd Saturday of the month. More information regarding this hike is forthcoming.

DATC Booth at Ned Smith Nature and Arts Festival a Success

On Saturday, July 27th we set up our Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community (DATC) booth at the Ned Smith Nature and Arts Festival in Millersburg and it was a great success.  Our free giveaways attracted many children and their parents. Kids would line up for our Appalachian Trail hand-stamps and temporary bug tattoos while we talked to their parents about Duncannon, the Appalachian Trail, Duncannon Outdoor Club hiking opportunities, ticks and invasive species such as the Wooly Adelgid.

If you’re not in any of the photos, be sure to come out next year and join us in the month of June for another fun day at the Duncannon ATC Festival.  Photos follow below:
