DUNCANNON OUTDOOR CLUB 2023 SCHEDULE

Third Saturday of each Month.  Time will depend on the hike event for that Saturday.  Date may change due to conflicts.

Feb. 4th – Come with the DOC and learn about Great Horned Owls.  Bushwhack at an average pace on the Takach property looking for signs of the great bird for approximately 2 to 3 miles on moderate terrain. Afterwards, try your hand at dissecting sterilized owl pellets at the Takach’s residence.  Cost is 6 dollars to cover the cost of the pellets.  Meet at 9:00 am at 34 McNaughton Dr., Duncannon.  Call 717- 395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register.

March 4th – Come with the DOC for an average paced 3 mile hike on easy to moderate terrain at Detweiler Park.  The theme for discussion is animal tracks and signs.  Meet at the at the Dauphin County Agriculture and Natural Resources Center 1451 Peters Mountain RD Dauphin, PA at 9:00 am.  Call Deb at 717-395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register.

Feb. 25th – Come to the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area and observe the migration of thousands of Snow Geese and Tundra Swans as they touch down at this important way station.  Then hike an average paced 6 mile hike over moderate to easy terrain on a series of trails that form a loop back to the visitor’s center.  There are 2 climbs ranging from 300 to 400 ft.  Meet at the Penn Dot parking lot 429 N Enola to carpool at 9:00 am.  Call 717-395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register.  Please reimburse drivers 10 cents per mile and for turnpike tolls.  Bring your cameras and binoculars if you have them.

April 15thLearn about Pennsylvania snakes on a DOC hike from RT225 to Table Rock and back for an average paced 4 mile out and back hike over easy to moderate terrain on the Appalachian Trail.  Meet at the RT 225 AT trailhead (40.411973,-76.930009) at 9:00 am.  Call 717-395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register.

May 20thJoin the DOC on a canoe/kayak trip from Blue Mountain Outfitters (BMO) to West Fairview for an opportunity to observe the nesting birds on Wade Island and learn about Cormorants, White Egrets, and Black-Crowned Night Herons.  Cost is $12.50 if you bring your own boat.  Rent a kayak for $45.00 plus a $7.50 shuttle fee, a two man kayak for $65.00 plus $7.50 each person, a canoe for $45.00 plus $7.50 each person.  Tax is not included in these figures.  Call Deb at 717-395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register.  We will meet at BMO at 9:30 am.  Wait for all to arrive, at which time we will make payments due.

June 24th Join us for an average paced 6 mile hike over moderate to strenuous terrain starting at the AT RT 850 trailhead to Scotts Farm.  The theme will be Daylilies.  Meet at RT 114 Park and Ride (40.275010,-77.046370) at 9:00 am.  Due to limited parking, if there are a large number of cars we will drop some cars off at Scotts Farm and then carpool to the AT RT 850 trailhead.   Call 717-395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register.

July 15thLearn about turtles/tortoises by hiking with the DOC at Wildwood.  We will be hiking the 3 mile easy, loop trail at an average pace.  We will be meeting at 9:00 am. at the Nature Center parking lot. Bring binoculars and camera if you wish to photograph wildlife. Call 717-395-2462 or email imnoonah@ptd.net to register.  This is a dog friendly hike, however, dogs must be leashed.

Aug. 19thHike up Hawk Rock in Duncannon at your own pace.  Have you ever wanted to see the views from Hawk Rock but were afraid you would slow up the group or not make it?  Now is your chance to hike at your own pace.  The hike leader will be the last one up and last down.  It is one mile up and 1 mile down on moderate terrain with the option to go a short distance to the second view.  We will be learning about the Millipede, the earliest animal to leave water.  We will be meeting at 9:00 am at the Duncannon Recycling Center (40.382962,-77.033172).  Call 717-395-2462 or email imnoonah@ptd.net to register.

 Oct. 28th Come with the DOC for an average paced 3 mile hike on easy to moderate terrain at Wagner Park for a Hunter’s Moon night hike.  The 3 mile hike will be on moderate to easy terrain at an average pace.  Learn about the phases of the moon.  Bring headlamps or flashlights and meet at 600 Paradise Rd., New Bloomfield, PA which is a right turn off of RT 274 West approximately 5 miles outside of Duncannon at 6:30 pm.  The park is on your left off of Paradise Rd. at the first intersection.  Call 717-395-2462 or email imnoonah@ptd.net to register.
