Duncannon Outdoor Club (DOC) Schedule: 2024
Schedule: Third Saturday of each Month. Time will depend on the hike event for that Saturday. Date may change due to conflicts.
Jan. 20th – Join the DOC for an average paced 7.7 mile shuttle hike on moderate terrain from Shippensburg Rd. to Pine Grove Furnace State Park. The theme for discussion is the opossum. Feb. 17th – Come to the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area and observe the migration of thousands of Snow Geese and Tundra Swans as they touch down at this important way station. Then hike an average paced 6 mile hike over moderate to easy terrain on a series of trails that form a loop back to the visitor’s center. There are 2 climbs ranging from 300 to 400 ft. Meet at the Penn Dot parking lot 429 N Enola to carpool at 8:00 am. Call 717-395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register. Please reimburse drivers 10 cents per mile and for turnpike tolls. Bring your lunch, cameras and binoculars.
March 16th – Come with the DOC for an average paced 4 mile hike on easy to moderate terrain at Detweiler Park. The theme for discussion is animal tracks and signs. Meet at the at the Dauphin County Agriculture and Natural Resources Center 1451 Peters Mountain RD Dauphin, PA at 9:00 am. Call Deb at 717-395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register. This is a dog friendly hike.
April 20th – Learn about Pennsylvania snakes on a DOC hike from RT225 to Table Rock and back for an average paced out and back hike for a 4 mile total, over easy to moderate terrain on the Appalachian Trail. Meet at the RT 225 A.T. trailhead (40.411973,-76.930009) at 9:00 am. Call 717-395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register.
May 18th – Join the DOC on a canoe/kayak trip from Blue Mountain Outfitters (BMO) to West Fairview for an opportunity to observe the nesting birds on Wade Island and learn about Cormorants, White Egrets, and Black-Crowned Night Herons. Costs for kayak and canoe rentals, shuttle fees or bringing your own boat will be determined by the size of the group attending. (Larger group = less money: group of 4 =$45.00 to rent + $10.00 shuttle fee =$55.00 each) Registration for this event closes on May 10th 2024 so final cost can be determined prior to the event. June 22nd –Come to a dog friendly, average paced 6 mile loop hike on moderate terrain from RT 850 AT trailhead to Darlington Trail to Miller’s Gap Road back to 850. We will learn about dogs, what to do if attacked, dogs and hiking, etc. Meet at the State Game Lands 170 parking lot along RT 850 at 9:00 am. July 15th – Learn about turtles/tortoises by hiking with the DOC at Wildwood. We will be hiking the 3 mile easy, loop trail at an average pace. We will be meeting at 9:00 am at the Nature Center parking lot. Bring binoculars and camera if you wish to photograph wildlife. Call 717-395-2462 or email dtakach@duncannonatc.org to register. This is a dog friendly hike, however, dogs must be leashed.
Aug. 17th – Hike up Hawk Rock in Duncannon to the blue trail and then to the old furnace stack off the reservoir road and back on the reservoir road for an approximate 12 mile loop hike over moderate, strenuous, and easy terrain. We will be learning about the Millipede, the earliest animal to leave water and breathe air. We will be meeting at 9:00 am at the Duncannon Recycling Center (40.382962,-77.033172). Sept. 21st – Join us for a 9 mile, average paced hike over moderate to strenuous terrain on the Pulpit Rock and Pinnacle Loop trail. We will be learning about Fishers which have been seen at Little Buffalo State Park. Meet at the Penn Dot parking lot at the Summerdale Mall (429 N. Enola RD, Enola) at 8:00am. Oct. 19th –Come “hike at your own pace” for a total of 2 miles up and back on moderate and easy terrain to Hawk Rock and Eagles Edge views. Wear orange. Nov. 16th – Come to an average paced 8.5 mile loop hike over easy to moderate terrain at Pinchot State Park. We will be learning some amazing things about the common gray squirrel. Dec. 21st – Come to Little Buffalo State Park for a 5.5 mile average paced hike over moderate to strenuous terrain. There are a series of 9 climbs, so this is not an easy hike for beginners. Learn where animals go in winter. After the hike stay and enjoy the Little Buffalo Christmas Trail. We will meet at 4:00 pm at the Little Buffalo State Park Office parking lot, 1579 State Park Rd.
