Jan. 18th – Join the DOC for an average paced 7.7 mile shuttle hike on moderate terrain from Shippensburg Rd. to Pine Grove Furnace State Park. The theme for discussion is the opossum. Feb. 15th – Come to the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area and observe the migration of thousands of Snow Geese and Tundra Swans as they touch down at this important way station. Then hike an average paced 6 mile hike over moderate to easy terrain on a series of trails that form a loop back to the visitor’s center. There are 2 climbs ranging from 300 to 400 ft. March 15th – Come with the DOC for an average paced 4 mile hike on easy to moderate terrain at Detweiler Park. The theme for discussion is animal tracks and signs. April 19th – Come to an average paced 6 mile in and out hike over easy to moderate terrain on a relatively flat section of the AT. We will be learning about the rubber duck disaster!!! May 10th – Join the DOC on a canoe/kayak trip from Blue Mountain Outfitters (BMO) to West Fairview for an opportunity to observe the nesting birds on Wade Island and learn about Cormorants, White Egrets, and Black-Crowned Night Herons. Costs for kayak and canoe rentals, shuttle fees or bringing your own boat will be determined by the size of the group attending. June 28th –Come on an average paced 2.5 mile loop hike over strenuous to moderate terrain for an elevation gain of 669 feet at the Hammer Woodland Cove Preserve in Marysville. The theme for discussion will be the Wood Rat. Meet at 9:00 am at the United Methodist Church of Marysville (450 Sylvan St. Upper parking lot.) I drive a white Highlander. July 19th – Come out for the average paced .9 mile easy to moderate hike at Ringing Rocks County Park. Make sure to bring a hammer with you so you can play the rocks! After striking the rocks and finishing the trail we will drive 13 miles to Tohickon Valley Park where we will hike an average paced 3.7 miles on moderate terrain to the High Rocks Vista. Meet at the at the Tractor Supply parking lot at the Summerdale Mall (429 N. Enola RD, Enola) at 8:00am. (I will be driving a white Highlander.) Aug. 16th – Did you ever want to join a hike up to Hawk Rock but were afraid you would hold people up or not make it to the top? Well, come “hike at your own pace” for a total of 2 miles up and back on moderate and easy terrain to Hawk Rock and Eagles Edge. We will be learning about the millipede. Sept. 20th – Come to a moderate to strenuous average paced hike at Ricketts Glenn State Park. We will witness over 20 falls as we hike up the East Falls Trail, go across Highland Tail and down the West Falls Trails back to the bottom of the mountain. The theme of the hike is “Tannic Acid in Nature”. Meet at Clarks Ferry Park and Ride at 8:00 am. (I will be driving a white Highlander.) Oct. 18th –Hike up Hawk Rock in Duncannon to the blue trail and then to the old furnace stack off the reservoir road and back on the reservoir road for an approximate 12 mile loop hike over moderate, strenuous, and easy terrain. We will be learning about the history of the location. We will be meeting at 9:00 am at the Duncannon Recycling Center (40.382962,-77.033172). Wear orange. I drive a white Highlander. Dec. 20th- Come to Little Buffalo State Park for a 2 mile average paced hike over easy to moderate terrain. After the hike we will enjoy the Little Buffalo Christmas Trail. Santa should be in his workshop selling cookies and hot chocolate while entertainment is provided on the stage. We will meet at 4:00 pm at the Little Buffalo State Park Office parking lot, 1579 State Park Rd. Newport, PA. I drive a white Highlander.
