Jan. 15th – Join the DOC for an average paced 6 mile hike on moderate to easy terrain from Boiling Springs to York Rd and back on the AT. The theme for discussion is the opossum. Feb. 12th – Come to an average paced 4 mile hike on moderate to strenuous terrain up Kings Gap Mountain on Rocky Scree Trail to the outlook. We will take a break at the mansion and nature center if it is open and then return down the mountain. We will be learning about Great Horned Owls. Meet at Pine Plantation Parking off Kings Gap Rd. March 5th – Come to the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area as we learn about and observe the migration of thousands of Snow Geese and Tundra Swans at this important way station. Then hike an average paced 6 mile hike over moderate to strenuous terrain on a series of trails that form a loop back to the visitor’s center. There are 2 climbs ranging from 300 to 400 ft. Meet at the at the Penn Dot parking lot at the Summerdale Mall (429 N. Enola RD, Enola) at 8:00am. (I will be driving a white Highlander.) April 9th – Join us for a 9 mile, average paced hike over moderate to strenuous terrain on the Pulpit Rock and Pinnacle Loop trail. We will be learning about Fishers which have been seen at Little Buffalo State Park. Meet at the Penn Dot parking lot at the Summerdale Mall (429 N. Enola RD, Enola) at 8:00am. May 21st – Hike 3 miles at an average pace over easy to moderate terrain at Wildwood Park as we check off animals and plants seen along the way on individual nature cards. June 4th – Join the DOC on a canoe/kayak trip from Blue Mountain Outfitters (BMO) to West Fairview for an opportunity to observe the nesting birds on Wade Island and learn about Cormorants, White Egrets, and Black-Crowned Night Herons. Cost is $12.50 if you bring your own boat. Rent a kayak for $45.00 plus a $7.50 shuttle fee, a two man kayak for $65.00 plus $7.50 each person, a canoe for $45.00 plus $7.50 each person. July 16th ??– Join us for a three hour tour at Fort Indiantown Gap to observe the endangered Regal Fritillary butterfly and the habitat necessary for breeding and providing success for 100 other species of conservation concerns in PA. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing for a nature walk on gravel trails and mowed paths. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, binoculars, lunch, and cameras. Meet at 8:30 am at the Penn Dot parking lot at the Summerdale Mall (429 N. Enola RD, Enola) at 8:00am. (I will be driving a white Highlander.) Aug. 20th – Come on an adventure to see the famous Haystacks, rock formations in the Loyalsock Creek. We will hike 3 miles in at an average pace on easy to moderate terrain, stay for lunch, and swim for those who wish to do so, then return for a total of 6 miles. Bring suits or a change of clothes if you plan on swimming. Meet at Clarks Ferry Park and Ride at 8:00 am. (I will be driving a white Highlander.) Please reimburse drivers 10 cents per mile (total mileage is 190 miles). Pack a lunch.
Sept. 17th – Come to an average paced 10 mile hike at Big Spring State Park on the Iron Horse Trail on easy to strenuous terrain. We will learn about Lyme Disease prior to setting out. Oct. 15th – Come to a moderate to strenuous average paced hike at Ricketts Glenn State Park. We will witness over 20 falls as we hike up the East Falls Trail, go across Highland Tail and down the West Falls Trails back to the bottom of the mountain. The theme of the hike is “Tannic Acid in Nature”. Meet at Clarks Ferry Park and Ride at 8:00 am. (I will be driving a white Highlander.) Nov. 19th – Come out for the average paced .9 mile easy to moderate hike at Ringing Rocks County Park. Make sure to bring a hammer with you so you can play the rocks! After striking the rocks and finishing the trail we will drive 13 miles to Tohickon Valley Park where we will hike an average paced 3.9 miles on moderate terrain to the High Rocks Vista. Meet at the at the Penn Dot parking lot at the Summerdale Mall (429 N. Enola RD, Enola) at 8:00am. (I will be driving a white Highlander.) Dec. 17th -Come to a dog friendly, average paced 3 mile loop hike on moderate/easy terrain at Detweiler Park.
