Duncannon Outdoor Club (DOC) Schedule: 2019
Schedule: Third Saturday of each Month. Time will depend on the hike event for that Saturday. Date may change due to conflicts.
Jan. 19th – Join the DOC for an average paced 4 mile hike on easy to moderate terrain at Detweiler Park. The theme for discussion is animal tracks and signs. Meet at the Geisinger Holy Spirit Duncannon Center at 9:00 am. or alternately at the Dauphin County Agriculture and Natural Resources Center 1451 Peters Mountain RD Dauphin, PA at 9:30 am. Feb. 16th – Come to an average paced 6 mile in and out hike over easy to moderate terrain on a relatively flat section of the AT. We will be learning about foxes. Meet 9:00 am. at the Geisinger Holy Spirit Duncannon Center or alternately at the Stony Ridge Park, 50 Bernheisel Bridge Road, Carlisle, PA at 9:30 am. Mar. 2nd – Come to the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area and observe the migration of Snow Geese and Tundra Swans as they touch down at this important way station. We will learn the difference between divers and dabblers. Then hike an average paced 6 mile hike over moderate to strenuous terrain on a series of trails that form a loop back to the visitor’s center. There are 2 climbs from 300 to 400 ft. Meet at the Geisinger Holy Spirit Duncannon Center at 8:30 am. or what used to be the Kmart parking lot in the Summerdale Mall (429 N. Enola Rd Enola, PA) at 9:00 am. Bring your cameras and binoculars if you have them and pack a lunch.
April 27th – Hike an average paced 9 mile hike over moderate terrain at Weiser State Forest. Hike up the mountain, along the ridge, and back down. The theme will be pokeweed. Please reimburse drivers 10 cents a mile for the 46 mile trip. Meet at the Geisinger Holy Spirit Duncannon Center at 9:00 am. or alternately at Clarks Ferry Bridge Rte. 147 AT parking at 9:15 am. May 18th– Come on a day trip and hike the falls at Ricketts Glen State Park for an average paced 7.2 mile hike on moderate to strenuous terrain. Hike up the mountain by the Northeast falls, across the Highland trail, and down the Southwest falls trail. You must have appropriate footwear as the fall trails are wet and slippery. Pack a lunch, water, and camera for some great pictures. Hiking poles are encouraged. Please reimburse drivers 10 cents per mile for the 190 mile trip. June 8th – Join the DOC on a canoe/kayak trip from Blue Mountain Outfitters (BMO) to West Fairview for an opportunity to observe the nesting birds on Wade Island and learn about invasive water species. Cost is $12.50 if you bring your own boat. Rent a kayak for $45.00 plus a $7.50 shuttle fee, a two man kayak for $65.00 plus $7.50 each person, a canoe for $45.00 plus $7.50 each person. Aug. 17th –Bring the family to a kid friendly, child paced hike for 1 mile over easy terrain at Little Buffalo State Park. We will use the Little Buffalo Quest Guide to follow rhyming clues and directions as we stroll through the park, while spending a little time at the new playground. Meet at the Geisinger Holy Spirit Duncannon Center at 9:00 or alternately at the park office parking lot 1579 State Park Rd. Newport, PA at 9:30 am. Sept. 21st – Hike an average pace 6 mile shuttle hike over moderate terrain from Kings Gap Environmental Center to Pine Grove Furnace State Park. We will learn about the invasive plant, the Tree of Heaven. Meet at the Geisinger Holy Spirit Duncannon Center at 9:00 am. to carpool or alternately at Rte. 114 Community Parking. Oct. 19th – Come to a “hike at your own pace”, 2 mile, up and back hike to Hawk Rock View over moderate terrain. Answer funny riddles about nature posted along the way. Wear orange. Meet at the Giesinger Holy Spirit Duncannon Center to carpool at 9:00 am or alternately at the Duncannon Recycling Center at 9:15 am. (99 Watershed Rd, Duncannon). Nov. 16th – Want to learn about cowbirds? Come out for a 2 mile, average paced hike over moderate terrain at Little Buffalo State Park. This is a family friendly hike. We will learn about the notorious cowbird through a kid friendly activity. Meet at the Geisinger Holy Spirit Duncannon Center at 9:00 am. to carpool or alternately at Little Buffalo State Park office parking lot (1579 State Park Rd, Newport, PA) at 9:30 am. Dec. 14th – Join us for an 8 mile, average paced hike over easy terrain. This is a dog friendly hike at Swatera State Park. Learn about the differences between such terms as torpor, hibernation and other terms such as crepuscular. We will also get to tour a cabin built over a small waterfall.
