Central PA Outdoor Activities and Volunteer Opportunities

The following list of activities comes from the Susquehanna Appalachian Trail Club.  You’re more than welcome to attend any of the events or you can volunteer to help out; there’s something for everyone!

KTA Super HikeSept. 7 – While SATC/CVATC Checkpoint 1 has enough volunteers, KTA is still looking for volunteers for other areas at the event. Contact Shanna Klucar, ktaadmin@verizon.net or (717) 238-7017.

Outdoor Day for Wounded Veterans and Their FamiliesSept. 7 – Pinchot State Park, 10 AM-3 PM.  A day of activities in which veterans and their families can try new forms of outdoor recreation, improve their skills, and enjoy our great outdoors. Craig Barnhart needs 1 or 2 volunteers to help staff the SATC exhibit at this event. Please contact Craig at craigsbarnhart@gmail.com

National Public Lands Day at Pine Grove Furnace SP – Sept. 21 – Volunteers can help with 3 hours of work in the morning such as removing invasive species and improving trails, followed by lunch (grilled items provided by the Friends plus potluck dishes brought by attendees). ATC Family Hiking DaySept. 28 – ATC, Mid Atlantic Regional Office is looking to promote 6-8 hikes that day.  Contact Kelly McGinley at kmcginley@appalachiantrail.org for an electronic hike submission form or call Kelly at the Regional Office (717)258-5771.

KTA Fall Hiking WeekendOct. 11 – 13 – Doubling Gap Center, Newville, PA. SATC and CVATC are co-hosts for this exciting weekend.

SATC Fall Membership MeetingOct. 24, 6:30pmCamp Hill Giant Community Center. “Snakes Along Our Pennsylvania Trails” presented by Aura Stauffer. Join fellow SATC Members and non-members for this exciting evening of camaraderie. No RSVP necessary.

Pine Grove Furnace Fall Furnace FestOct. 26-27 – PGF State Park. Consider a donation for the auction or become a volunteer at this event. Email pinegrovefriends@gmail.com or call the park office at (717) 486-7174.

ATC’S 2013 Membership DriveOct. 29 – View the film “Appalachian Impressions” at the Carlisle Theatre, hear Jim Foster’s story of thru-hiking the AT; meet Anne Baker, AT Ambassador; and Nicole Wooten of ATC. Non-ATC members and current ATC members encouraged to attend. Receive 1 free ATC membership or gift membership to ATC, while helping to protect the A.T. Prizes, too.
